Childhood and origins: from Oklahoma to the world
Carlos Ray Norris was born on March 10, 1940 in Ryan, Oklahoma, the son of a housewife mother and a Second World War veteran father whom he himself described as an alcoholic.
When Norris was sixteen, his parents divorced and he moved to California with his mother and his brothers. Far from having a privileged childhood, the future action cinema icon admitted honestly that he was an introverted boy with no great apparent talents.
In his autobiography, Norris described his childhood as that of a “shy, non-athletic, antisocial and frequently bullied” boy.
He said he had Irish and Cherokee roots, and was the eldest of three brothers: Wieland (1943–1970), who died in Vietnam, and Aaron (1951–), who became a Hollywood producer. Wikipedia
Military service: where Chuck Norris was born
In 1958, Norris joined the United States Air Force as an Air Policeman. While stationed at Osan Air Base, in South Korea, it was there that he picked up the nickname “Chuck” and began his training in Tang Soo Do.
That moment would change everything. The shy young man from Oklahoma found in martial arts not only a discipline, but a philosophy of life that would shape every aspect of his existence.
After his discharge in 1962, Norris worked at the aerospace company Northrop and opened a chain of karate schools whose celebrity students included Steve McQueen, Chad McQueen, Bob Barker, Priscilla Presley, Donny Osmond and Marie Osmond.
Martial career: the undefeated champion
The titles that made him a legend
Norris was the first man to win the Professional World Karate Championship, received the Competitor of the Year award in 1968 and in 1975 was recognised as Instructor of the Year. He was also the first person to be voted into the Black Belt Hall of Fame.
His record as a fighter was 65 wins and barely 5 losses, with victories over great champions such as Joe Lewis, Skipper Mullins, Arnold Urquidez, Ronald L. Marchini, Victor Moore and Louis Delgado.
He won the World Middleweight Karate Championship six times in a row without a single defeat, before retiring undefeated.
A historic record: the most exclusive black belt in the world
In 1997, Norris became the first Western martial artist to receive recognition as a Grand Master with an 8th degree black belt in Taekwondo, a milestone in 4,500 years of martial tradition.
He also earned a 10th degree black belt in Tang Soo Do, being one of only three Americans to reach eighth dan in Taekwondo.
Chun Kuk Do: his own martial art
Chuck Norris created the martial art called Chun Kuk Do, based mainly on Tang Soo Do and including elements of various disciplines he practised throughout his life.
He also founded the United Fighting Arts Federation (UFAF), which has more than 3,300 black belts of the Chuck Norris System around the world.
Career in cinema: from the dojo to Hollywood
The debut alongside Bruce Lee
Norris made his acting debut in a small uncredited role in the 1969 cult film The Wrecking Crew, starring Dean Martin.
But it was in 1972 that the world really got to know him. In The Way of the Dragon (known in the USA as Return of the Dragon), he starred in a memorable fight with Bruce Lee in the Roman Colosseum, which became one of the most iconic combat scenes in cinema history.
The golden decade of the 80s
From 1984, Norris began starring in films for Cannon Films. In four years he became the most important star of that label, appearing in eight films that included the trilogy Missing in Action, Code of Silence, the Delta Force pair and Firewalker.
In Missing in Action (1984), he played a former prisoner of war who returns to Vietnam to free other soldiers still held captive, a role that connected deeply with the American public of the time.

Walker, Texas Ranger: the series that immortalised him
Chuck Norris is especially remembered for his lead role across nine seasons as Sergeant Cordell Walker, a steely-eyed former marine who delivered justice with roundhouse kicks and an old-fashioned moral code.
Between 1993 and 2001, Walker, Texas Ranger established itself as one of the best loved and longest-running action series on American television, making Norris a household name all over the planet and cementing his legacy as a symbol of vigilante action heroes.
Personal life and family
His marriages and children
Norris married Dianne Kay Holechek in December 1958, when they were barely 18 and 17 respectively, and had been classmates at North High School in Torrance. They separated in 1988 after 30 years of marriage and had two sons: Mike (born in 1962) and Eric (born in 1965).
In 1998, Norris married Gena O'Kelley, a model 23 years younger than him. Together they had twin daughters: Dakota and Danilee, born in 2001.
The most human chapter: caring for his wife
The actor stepped away from his career in 2013 to become the full-time carer of his wife Gena, who suffered serious complications from exposure to the gadolinium used in MRI scans. In 2017, they filed a $10 million lawsuit against 11 medical companies, although they withdrew it in 2020.
That gesture revealed the other side of the man the world knew as an implacable warrior: that of a tender husband completely devoted to the woman he loved.
The “Chuck Norris Facts”: the viral phenomenon
In the internet era, Chuck Norris went beyond cinema to become a myth of popular culture. In the 2000s, cyberspace filled with the so-called “Chuck Norris Facts”, hyperbolic and satirical claims about his strength and tough-guy personality, such as: “Chuck Norris does not read books. He stares them down until he gets the information he wants.”
Of all the Chuck Norris Facts, the actor's personal favourite was: “Before going to sleep, the Boogeyman checks his closet for Chuck Norris.” Far from being annoyed, he always took them with humour and good spirits.
Activism, politics and Christian legacy
In his later years, Norris became increasingly active politically as a conservative and published several books with Christian and patriotic themes.
In 2007 he used his popularity to support the Republican candidate Mike Huckabee in the 2008 presidential elections, appearing in a memorable viral promotional video.
His Christian faith was always a fundamental part of his identity, and he devoted part of his life to educational programmes for at-risk young people through martial arts.
Chuck Norris's code of honour
Chuck Norris did not only teach people to fight: he taught people to live. The twelve principles that guided his life included commitments such as developing his potential to the maximum, always keeping a positive attitude, not criticising others, looking for the good in every person and staying goal-oriented throughout his whole life.
He passed those values on through his martial art Chun Kuk Do and his community programmes for young people in schools in Houston, Texas.
Legacy: what does Chuck Norris leave the world?
Chuck Norris leaves a legacy few actors or athletes can match:
- A historic martial artist: undefeated champion and creator of his own martial art
- An unrepeatable action star: star of films that defined a genre in the 80s
- A television symbol: nine seasons of Walker, Texas Ranger
- An internet myth: one of the first great viral phenomena of digital culture
- A model for life: his code of honour, his family devotion and his faith make him a human reference beyond entertainment
His family summed up his essence better than anyone: “Through his work, discipline and kindness, he inspired millions of people around the world and left a lasting impact on so many lives.”
