Childhood and beginnings at Alianza Lima

Claudio Pizarro was born in Callao in 1978 and grew up playing football on the rough pitches of the port city. From his teens he showed an uncommon nose for goal, which led him to try his luck in professional football. He debuted in 1996, at barely 17, at Deportivo Pesquero, and shortly afterwards moved to Alianza Lima, the club he loved, where in little time he became a starter.

With Alianza Lima he scored 25 goals in two seasons, and his performances caught the attention of European football. In 1999, at only 20, he left Peru to sign for Werder Bremen in Germany, starting without knowing it one of the most brilliant careers a Peruvian footballer has ever had abroad.

The leap to Germany: Werder Bremen and Bayern Munich

His first spell at Werder Bremen (1999-2001) was a statement of intent: in his first season he scored 10 goals and in the second he was already the team's main attacking reference. His goalscoring ability convinced the giants of Bayern Munich, who paid for him in 2001 one of the highest sums in the club's history at that time.

First spell at Bayern (2001-2007)

With the Bavarians, Pizarro formed a legendary attacking partnership with the Dutchman Roy Makaay, with whom he shared the goalscoring duties for several seasons. In this period he won three Bundesliga titles (2002-03, 2004-05, 2005-06), three DFB-Pokal titles (2002-03, 2004-05, 2005-06) and the 2001 Intercontinental Cup, in which he beat Boca Juniors.

Chelsea (2007-2008)

In 2007 he made the leap to the English Premier League to wear the shirt of Chelsea FC. His time in London was quiet individually, but he was part of the squad that reached the 2008 Champions League final, lost against Manchester United in Moscow.

Return to Werder Bremen (2008-2012)

In 2008 he returned to Werder Bremen, where he reached his highest European level. In the 2008-09 season, the club won the DFB-Pokal and were runners-up in the UEFA Cup, losing to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Istanbul final. Pizarro was the key piece of that team: he scored 17 goals in the 2008-09 Bundesliga.

Second spell at Bayern (2012-2015)

In 2012, at 33, he returned to Bayern Munich to live his most glorious period: he was part of the historic treble-winning team of 2012-13 (Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and Champions League), and later added the UEFA Super Cup and the 2013 Club World Cup. In total, in the Bayern shirt he scored 125 goals in 327 matches across his two spells.

Final years: Köln and retirement (2017-2020)

After a last spell at 1. FC Köln (2017-18), Pizarro returned once more to Werder Bremen, where he played his last two professional seasons. On July 6, 2020 he announced his official retirement at 41, closing a career of more than 20 years in German football.

Records and legendary figures

  • 197 goals in the Bundesliga: for many years he was the top foreign scorer in the history of the German league, until Robert Lewandowski passed his mark.
  • 490 matches in the Bundesliga: he is the foreign player with the most appearances in the history of the German league.
  • All-time top scorer for Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga.
  • Oldest scorer in the history of the Bundesliga: in his last season (2019-20), at 41, he scored and became the oldest player to net a goal in the German league.
  • 320 official goals in 809 matches as a professional at club level.

Claudio Pizarro in the Peru national team

With the Peru national team, Pizarro played 85 matches and scored 20 goals. He debuted in 1999 and was part of four Copa América tournaments (1999, 2004, 2007 and 2015; he missed the 2011 edition through injury), captaining the team for a good part of his time with the national side, until the 2015 Copa América. His greatest frustration was not qualifying for a World Cup: as he himself confessed in several interviews, “the only thing my career lacked was a World Cup”.

Life after retirement: Bayern ambassador and a new family

After hanging up his boots, Claudio Pizarro stayed connected to German football. In September 2020, Bayern Munich “signed” him as an official club ambassador, joining legends such as Lothar Matthäus, Giovane Elber and Bixente Lizarazu. “It is an honour and a source of pride to return to the Bayern Munich family as an ambassador of the best club in Europe”, he said at his presentation.

In 2022, Werder Bremen organised a historic farewell match for him at the Weserstadion, with a full house and the participation of world legends who paid tribute to him.

Personal life and children

Unlike other footballers of his generation, Pizarro always kept a low profile and away from scandals. With Karla Salcedo, his wife for more than two decades, he had three children: Claudio Jr., Antonella and Gianluca. The couple separated in 2022.

In 2025, the former footballer surprised everyone by becoming a father for the fourth time: Amara was born, the daughter of his relationship with Helen Ballón, a Peruvian woman ten years younger than him. His fatherhood became public in November 2025, when the programme 'Magaly TV, la firme' revealed that the baby was already seven months old; the relationship with Helen had been known since the beginning of 2024. Helen, passionate about art and yoga, lived for years in Palm Beach (Florida) and now lives in Munich with Pizarro and Amara, although she visits Lima to teach yoga classes at a school in Miraflores. In January 2026, a video of the 'Bomber' playing with Amara went viral on social media, accompanied by Helen's message: “Her first love arrives before language”.
