Cristiano Ronaldo, Portuguese footballer, celebrating a goal in an official match.

At 41, Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro is still the centre of the football world. The all-time top scorer, the first billionaire footballer on the planet and the person with the most followers on Instagram in the world. But his story did not start among lights and packed stadiums. It started in poverty, on a small Atlantic island called Madeira, where a hungry boy dreamed of changing his destiny through work and sacrifice.

From the poverty of Madeira to the world

Cristiano was born on February 5, 1985 in the Santo António neighbourhood, in Funchal. He was the youngest of four siblings. His father, José Dinis Aveiro, worked as a gardener and kit man for the local team Andorinha. His mother, Maria Dolores dos Santos, was a cook. They lived in a house so small that the four siblings shared the same room.

Cristiano's own mother revealed in her book that she considered not going ahead with the pregnancy because the money was not enough for a fourth child. It was a doctor's intervention that convinced her to continue. That boy who was almost never born would become the richest athlete in history.

The name “Ronaldo” was chosen by his father in honour of the actor and president Ronald Reagan, whom he admired. His great-grandmother came from Cape Verde, which gives him African roots he himself has acknowledged with pride.

His father, José Dinis, fought alcoholism his whole life. Cristiano was rarely able to have a normal conversation with him. In September 2005, when CR7 was barely 20 and already shining at Manchester United, his father died of liver failure. That pain marked the player's personality forever.

Education: football was his only classroom

Cristiano attended the Escola Básica e Secundária Dona Lionor in Madeira, but left his studies at 14 to devote himself exclusively to football. At only 12 he was sent to Lisbon to join the Sporting CP academy, away from his family for the first time.

That period was hard emotionally. He missed his family, suffered mockery over his Madeiran accent and on more than one occasion wanted to go home. He himself has told how, along with other Sporting teammates, they went to the nearby McDonald's to ask for the leftover burgers of the day because they had no money to eat. Years later, Ronaldo looked for those employees who fed them to take them out to dinner as a gesture of gratitude.

At 15, doctors discovered he suffered from a cardiac arrhythmia that required laser surgery. The operation was successful and his career was not affected.

Sporting Lisbon (2001–2003) He debuted on October 7, 2002, becoming the only player at the club to debut in the under-16, under-17, under-18, reserve and first teams in the same season. In July 2003, Sporting opened their stadium with a friendly against Manchester United. Ronaldo's performance was so dazzling that Sir Alex Ferguson signed him that very night.

Manchester United (2003–2009) He arrived at 18 for 18 million euros. He chose the legendary number 7 that George Best, Eric Cantona and David Beckham had worn. In 2007–08 he scored 42 goals, won the Champions League, the Premier League and his first Ballon d'Or. He left with 9 trophies in the cabinet.

Real Madrid (2009–2018): the golden era Real Madrid paid 94 million euros, a world record at that time. What came next was the most glorious period of his career: 450 goals in 438 matches, four Champions League titles and four Ballons d'Or. He was the first to pass 50 goals in a La Liga season (2011–12) and the first to score in 11 consecutive Champions League campaigns.

Juventus (2018–2021) 105 million euros. With Juventus he won two Italian leagues and two Italian Super Cups. He became the first player in history to pass 100 goals with four different clubs.

Al-Nassr FC (2023–present) In June 2025 he signed the most expensive contract renewal in the history of sport: 676 million dollars over two years according to The Sun, with an annual salary of 244.5 million dollars, goal bonuses (110,000 dollars per goal), and a 15% equity stake in the club. He has renewed until 2027.

Portugal national team: the eternal captain

Ronaldo debuted for Portugal on August 20, 2003. Since then he has led the team for more than two decades. His achievements with the Portuguese national side are unique in football history:

His numbers in 2026: chasing 1,000 goals

In February 2026, Ronaldo scored a brace for Al-Nassr and became the first footballer in history to score 500 goals after turning 30, reaching a total of 964 official goals in his career.

In total, he has more than 960 goals and 261 assists in more than 1,300 official matches, an attacking output with no precedent in the history of professional football.

He is just over 35 goals from the legendary 1,000 mark, and if injuries stay away, he could reach that figure towards the end of 2026 or the beginning of 2027. Ronaldo himself has repeated it in several interviews: he does not plan to hang up his boots without reaching a thousand.

Personal life: love, family and charity

Cristiano has five children. The eldest, Cristiano Ronaldo Jr. (Cristianinho), was born in June 2010 through surrogacy. In 2017 the twins Eva María and Mateo arrived, also through surrogacy.

Since 2016 he has been in a relationship with the Spanish-Argentine model and businesswoman Georgina Rodríguez, whom he met at a Gucci store in Madrid. In November 2017, Georgina gave birth to Alana Martina. In April 2022, the couple announced the birth of the twins Bella Esmeralda and Ángel. Little Ángel died tragically at birth, leaving the family devastated. On August 11, 2025 the couple announced their engagement and, exactly a year later, on August 11, 2026, they married in an intimate ceremony at their home in Cascais, Portugal, with their five children as witnesses.

On the charitable side, Ronaldo has auctioned trophies for good causes, has donated to hospitals and to victims of natural disasters, and has paid for heart operations for children without resources. His own experience with arrhythmia in childhood motivated him to fund these procedures anonymously for years.
