Suga's childhood and early years

Min Yoon-gi was born in Daegu, a city in the southeast of South Korea. He studied at Global Cyber University, on the Broadcasting and Entertainment programme, and then took a master's degree in Advertising and Media at Hanyang Cyber University, according to his Wikipedia profile.

He joined Big Hit Entertainment as a trainee and debuted with BTS in June 2013. From the start he stood out for his role in music production and not only as a rapper. Details about his family and childhood are not widely documented in verifiable sources, so at Famosix we prefer to stick to what is confirmed.

What is on record is that his path towards music went through Daegu: in fact, the alias Agust D comes from the initials “DT”, for Daegu Town, and from Suga written backwards. His link with production predates fame and explains why, already inside BTS, he took on composition, arrangement, mixing and mastering of his own material, an unusual profile among the rappers of a K-pop group.

Suga's professional career

Within BTS, Suga is part of the rap line alongside RM and j-hope, and has signed compositions and productions for the group. Outside BTS he built an identity of his own with the alias Agust D.

The main milestones are these:

  • 2013: debut with BTS in June.
  • 2016: releases the mixtape Agust D.
  • 2018: receives the Hwagwan Order of Cultural Merit, along with the other members of BTS.
  • 2020: releases the mixtape D-2.
  • 2021: is named Special Presidential Envoy for Future Generations and Culture, along with the group.
  • 2022: premieres the interview show Suchwita on YouTube, in December.
  • 2023: releases the album D-Day, on April 21; begins his social service on September 22.
  • 2025: finishes his social service and is discharged on June 21.

D-Day debuted at number 2 on the Billboard 200 with 140,000 equivalent units, according to Wikipedia, and passed a million copies sold on its first day. It includes collaborations with j-hope, IU, Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto and Woosung of The Rose, and mixes hip hop, trap, drill and alternative rock with traditional Korean instruments such as the haegeum.

From the SoundCloud mixtape to the D-Day tour

The first mixtape, Agust D, appeared on August 16, 2016 through SoundCloud and was self-produced. Four years later came D-2, and in 2023 D-Day closed what Consequence describes as the Agust D trilogy. The album has ten tracks and brings together IU on “People Pt.2”, j-hope on “HUH?!” and composer Ryuichi Sakamoto alongside Woosung of The Rose on “Snooze”. Consequence also notes that Suga took part in the writing and production of the record overall.

To present it, the SUGA | Agust D Tour “D-Day” started on April 26, 2023 in New York and ended on August 6 in Seoul, with 28 shows and some 320,000 attendees. According to the box-office data collected by Wikipedia, it grossed 57.2 million dollars, the highest figure for a South Korean soloist on a tour, and took him to number 37 in Billboard's 2023 annual tour ranking. It passed through North America, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore and South Korea.

Social service and return

Suga began his service as an alternative social worker at a public institution on September 22, 2023. According to Korea JoongAng Daily, the format was due to a previous shoulder injury that earned him a lower physical grading, and this type of service lasts 21 months, three more than active duty, as Gulf News explains. He was the third BTS member to begin this stage, after Jin and j-hope, and said goodbye to fans on Weverse with a “see you in 2025”. He was discharged on June 21, 2025.

That same year it emerged that the seven members had renewed their contract with BigHit Music to stay together. After Suga's discharge, the group was complete and prepared Arirang, their 2026 comeback.

Suga's personal life

Suga's private life stays largely out of the media. In 2023 he was an ambassador for the brands Valentino and NBA, and on his YouTube channel he hosts conversations with other artists on Suchwita.

There are no confirmed details about his love life, so we do not speculate.

Suga in 2026

With his discharge in June 2025, Suga was the last of the seven to complete his obligations, and BTS were able to return as a septet. On March 20, 2026 the group released Arirang, whose single “Swim” was their seventh number one in the United States; the album led the Billboard 200 for two consecutive weeks. On March 21 the concert at Gwanghwamun Square was broadcast on Netflix and on March 27 the documentary The Return premiered.

The Arirang World Tour started on April 9, 2026 in Goyang. In October it reaches Latin America: BTS play three concerts at the Estadio San Marcos in Lima on October 7, 9 and 10, with tickets sold out. If you are interested in global music, explore more international biographies.

Why the Agust D period matters

Agust D is the most personal part of Suga. The first mixtape, from 2016, and D-2, from 2020, preceded D-Day, from 2023, his first solo studio album. According to the review collected by Wikipedia, NME's critic gave it five stars and described him as a wise social commentator setting himself free.

The commercial backing was just as clear. D-Day debuted at number 2 on the Billboard 200 with 140,000 equivalent units and passed a million copies on its first day. Its singles “People Pt. 2”, with IU, and “Haegeum” were released on April 7 and 21, 2023, and the video for “Amygdala” arrived on the 24th of that month. The album proposes, according to the same summary, focusing on the present instead of looking with fear at the past or the future.

His producer profile also counts. The fact that he has credits on more than 160 songs registered in Korea helps explain why his collaborations with IU, Halsey, Psy and Juice Wrld are a central part of his career and not mere extras. At Famosix we see him as an artist who moved with the same ease between the studio, the stage and conversation, as Suchwita, his interview show, demonstrates.

Where to watch and listen to Suga

BTS' album Arirang, released on March 20, 2026, is the starting point for his most recent work. The March 21 concert and the documentary The Return were broadcast on Netflix, and D-Day remains the best gateway to his work as a soloist.

Conclusion

Suga is an uncommon case of a rapper who also produces, writes and leads projects of his own without ceasing to be part of a group. To follow the full story, read the BTS biography on Famosix, where we update the facts with every new development on the tour.
